Albert Le Nordez was appointed Bishop of Dijon in 1899. His conciliatory attitude toward the Republic, during the height of the crisis over the separation of Church and State, earned him strong hostility from the Catholic clergy, and he was ultimately removed from office by the Pope in 1904.
