My dear Doctor,
Our friend, Mr. Hermée, wrote to you about the steps we took together again. I made another one on my own, even more precise. I must not hide from you that efforts were made at the Ministry of the Interior to misrepresent your political views.
You were presented as being attached, out of memory and affection, to the July Monarchy and as being inclined to strengthen Mr. Thiers’s group if you, like him, were to enter the legislative body.
It is painful for me to have to report these circumstances to you, but in speaking frankly, I pay tribute to your character, and I am convinced that you will appreciate my intentions. For your sake and for ours, I want you to be appointed deputy...
