A note from Jean Lorrain, dictated and written by his mother and signed by him, addressed to Bottini, the illustrator of La Maison Philibert published in 1904 in Paris by Librairie Universelle.

“I will therefore see your submission in May, since I am not taking part in the Salon at the Journal this year, and, held here by very urgent work, I will not be returning to Paris before the first days of next month. Please accept my sincere regrets and my friendship.”

In 1904, to pay the very heavy fine to which he was sentenced following the lawsuit he lost against the painter Jeanne Jacquemin, he published La Maison Philibert, which features two brothel keepers.

His health deteriorated under the effect of drug abuse, especially ether, and syphilis.

Les Contes d'un buveur d'éther is a striking testimony to his excesses, his search for physical excitement, and artificial paradises.

He spent the last years of his life with his mother on the Côte d’Azur, in a climate more favorable to his physical condition.

There he wrote a multitude of novels and short stories, now depicting the aristocratic fauna of the Riviera.

On June 30, 1906, during a consultation for peritonitis with Professors Le Dentu, Pozzi, and Albert Robin, a bulletin was issued regarding the patient: “Very serious condition.

Any operation is considered impossible.” Jean Lorrain died the same day at 11:30 p.

The coffin was taken to Saint-Ferdinand church, where the funeral took place on July 4, and burial was carried out in Fécamp.
