Historian, journalist, politician, and French socialist theorist. Louis Blanc was born on October 28, 1811, in Madrid, where his father worked as a civil servant.

The family later settled in France. He studied in Paris at the Collège Charlemagne and quickly turned to journalism and history.

In the 1830s, Louis Blanc became one of the most prominent journalists on the republican left. In 1839, he founded the newspaper Revue du Progrès, where he developed his ideas on socialism. In 1840, he published his major work, The Organization of Labor, in which he set out his proposals for solving the social question. In it, he defended in particular: the creation of social workshops (state-supported production cooperatives); the importance of the right to work; and a more egalitarian economic organization, without the immediate abolition of private property.

Louis Blanc played a central role in the events of 1848. As a member of the provisional government, he helped create the national workshops, inspired by his ideas, even though their actual operation differed from his original plan. The economic crisis and the closure of the workshops led to the June Days (1848), after which Louis Blanc was discredited by conservatives. Accused of supporting the June uprising, he took refuge in England, where he lived for nearly twenty years.

He continued to write, notably his History of the French Revolution, a highly influential work.

He returned to France in 1870, after the ???? Under the Third Republic, he was elected deputy to the National Assembly and then to the Chamber of Deputies. Louis Blanc defended free, secular education and progressive social reforms. Louis Blanc died in Paris on December 6, 1882.

He was buried at Père-Lachaise.
