Already infinitely famous at the time of our letter, Sarah Bernhardt accuses Apollonie Sabatier of slander against her, which she attributes to the latter's jealousy and a need for publicity. The two celebrities were not the same age; Sarah Bernhardt was 35 years old while the president was approaching 58. One can notice on the letterhead the famous seal of Sarah Bernhardt made up of her initials S.
with the ribbon bearing the motto "Quand même" topped with a tragic mask with a sword and a jester symbolizing the theater. I am very grateful for the regrets you express for the unjust sorrow you caused me. Madame Sabatier continues her indecent slanders...Letters filled with coarse insults that one refuses to read. I believe that Madame Sabatier wants to appeal to the fame that the newspapers deny her. All of this bores me greatly. I would be very obliged, sir, if Madame Sabatier were to send you a letter against me, to kindly forward it to me.
Thank you and I regret to disturb you so much. Below, two photographs of Sarah Bernhardt at the time of our letter in 1879.
