Size: 20.5 x 13.5 cm. Charming little letter beautifully signed.

In 1849, Delacroix received the commission for three frescoes for the chapel of angels at the Saint-Sulpice church in Paris, a project he would work on until 1861, the year of our letter. These frescoes, Jacob Wrestling with the Angel and Heliodorus Driven from the Temple, accompanied by the ceiling lantern, Saint Michael Slaying the Dragon, are the spiritual testament of the painter. To create them, Delacroix settled on Rue Furstemberg nearby, from where this letter is presumably written. In the same year, 1861, Baudelaire published a laudatory article about the paintings at Saint-Sulpice, to which Delacroix responded with a warm letter to the poet. Baudelaire would publish in 1863 "The Work and Life of Eugène Delacroix," where he pays tribute to the genius of the painter. I would be very grateful if you could write a note to Mr. Trouillon asking him to give me my pastel as soon as possible.

He did not leave me his address. He promised it to me for the end of last week and I am in great need. I would be very thankful. Below: The Fight (or Wrestling) of Jacob with the Angel - Eugène Delacroix.

Below: Heliodorus Driven from the Temple - Eugène Delacroix.
