Archduke Joseph of Austria (1872-1962) Rare signed letter (1955) Autograph
Archduke of Austria, Palatine Prince of Hungary, and Prince of Bohemia. He held the position of field marshal of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and, briefly, regent of the Kingdom of Hungary (in 1918 and 1919). A career military officer, Archduke Joseph-August was made field marshal of the Austro-Hungarian imperial army during World War I. He mainly fought against Russia on the Eastern Front and Italy on the southern front of the Empire. In 1918, he was briefly appointed Homo regius of the Kingdom of Hungary by Emperor Charles I, who hoped to use his popularity to save his throne. However, the archduke, placed at the head of Hungary, recognized the independence government. After the interlude of the Hungarian Soviet Republic, Joseph-August was appointed regent but was forced to abdicate in favor of Admiral Miklós Horthy by the Allies. Nevertheless, he retained a certain official role and was made a member of the Hungarian upper house in 1927 and president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences from 1933 to 1944. Rare and interesting typed letter signed and corrected to René Cliquet.
