Beautiful autographed letter signed about his debts, dated February 24, 1862. Beautiful autographed letter signed dated February 24, 1862 in which he addresses his financial problems and requests financial assistance from his correspondent.

Along with the letter, the subscription mandates for his complete work of 102 volumes grouped into 40 large format volumes are included. This endeavor was intended to generate income to help solve his financial problems. The publication of this monumental edition of his works was a significant effort on Lamartine's part to repay his debts, although the financial success of this endeavor may not have been as great as he had hoped. He experienced financial problems despite his literary fame. Coming from an aristocratic family, he often faced difficulties due to excessive spending and ill-advised investments.

In 1848, his campaign for the presidency of the Second Republic left him in debt. He sold his castle to repay, but continued to struggle financially until his death in 1869. Sir, On the eve of an expropriation and forced sale of my property, a more ruinous sale for my creditors than for myself, I believed in the heart of my literary friends and I was not mistaken.

The eagerness of my subscribers to prevent this extremity through a loan, insignificant for each of them and liberating for me, was as prompt as it was cordial. I will never thank them enough.

I am not one of those burdened by gratitude; on the contrary, my possessions already mortgaged to the credit foncier will be twice as dear to me; once, because I received them from my fathers, another time, because I would have received them in part from you. I still lack one hundred and twenty thousand francs to prevent the judicial sale of the pledge of these needy creditors who would only find disappointment in the price of these properties decimated by legal fees. Will you consent to lend them to me immediately through a loan of 100 francs per head, or rather per heart? In return for this bulletin signed by you, I will undertake to repay you within two years.

Either in volumes designated by you, and printed separately for you among the 40 volumes of my complete works; Or in volumes of my Literary Conversations, a work reserved by me, which grows by 2 volumes per year and will have 18 volumes in 2 years; Or finally, in money, if you prefer; If this combination is welcomed by you who have already given me a free proof of your interest, please be kind enough to sign and send me this bulletin, and also prove to me that I was not mistaken in believing in the virtue of work and the generosity of Voluntary credit to save, with my poor and brave creditors, my honor and duty through the friendship of my country.
