Set of five letters by Jean Paulhan. Including one typed signed letter and 4 autograph signed letters, addressed to a friend and close correspondent (probably a literary collaborator). In-8 (21 x 13.5 cm), 3 on letterhead Nrf Paris - 43 rue de Beaune - 5 rue Sébastien-Bottin (VII?), one on letterhead Librairie Nrf Gallimard (5 rue Sébastien-Bottin - former?

43, rue de Beaune, Paris VII?) and 1 on plain paper folded in two. Typed signed letter dated October 19, 1933. Professional letter in which Paulhan mentions the publication of an article by Havel Ellis, his collaboration with the NRF, mentions M. Hirsch, commercial director of the NRF, and the Cahier Bleu, as well as editorial considerations.

Final handwritten note expressing a personal regret and the promise to see each other again. Dear Sir, I have owed you a letter for a long time.

Today, I am only replying to your last two words. As for Havel Ellis’s article, here is what seems to me the simplest solution: publish it in the Cahier Bleu, and I will quote from it, following the C.

A few excerpts in the N. In any case, I could not have published the article in full. I am sending it back to you enclosed. I have nothing to propose to you at the moment for the Cahier Bleu. But I will think about it very seriously. Thank you for your invitation; and good luck to Bergis Verlag — why this enigmatic title? [Handwritten signature] As for the exchange of advertising, that does not depend on me but on our commercial director Mr. Hirsch, to whom I am forwarding your letter, while telling him all the good things I intend to think about the Cahier Bleu. [Handwritten note]: I was very sorry to have missed you the other day. But we shall meet again.”

Autograph signed letter Monday 20, n.

Paulhan accepts an invitation from Italian friends and asks for details about the trip. Letter showing European literary circulation.

Dear friend, well, it is yes in principle, and please tell our Italian friends that I am very touched by their kind invitation. But you would be very kind to send me, as soon as you can, all details about the trip: exact date, etc. Thank you, and very amicably, Jean Paulhan.”

Autograph signed letter dated May 12, 1946. Letter mentioning his inability to take part in a trip to Sweden, though regretting missing the opportunity. Postwar letter showing a Paulhan overwhelmed by editorial work. “No, my dear friend, I cannot manage to fit into my work the break that would be needed for this trip to Sweden, which I would nevertheless have been happy to make with you. Thank you, and very cordially, Jean Paulhan.

Autograph signed letter Thursday 21, n. Paulhan is recovering from the flu, mentions the Pen Club (French, founded in 1921, an association that promotes freedom of expression and creation and defends the rights of writers and journalists), as well as his four grandchildren, and sends a book.

“My dear friend, I am recovering from the flu and cannot yet come to the Pen. Please be kind enough to have the supplies that are due to me handed to the bearer of this note. I have four minor grandchildren at home (from 4 to 17 years old), but I am not quite sure whether grandchildren count. Here is the book, and thanks again.

I believe you received it in due course. Otherwise I would be very pleased to send it to you.”

Autograph signed letter, December 9, n.

The writer apologizes for being unable to provide a copy of his book “Entretien,” but sends instead a work by Sade for which he wrote the preface. He mentions the joy of his children and grandchildren. “Dear friend, it is impossible to find an Entretien at the moment. I am sending you a Sade instead, for which I wrote the preface (and which seems to me very beautiful). But I will certainly manage to find an Entretien.

The children (and grandchildren) were delighted.”
