Robida and Fort were supposed to meet about a manuscript they were to browse together, a collaboration between the two friends, "but events got in the way." His brother and family arrived from Compiègne "fleeing under the shells." Robida is afraid for his city, his town hall, and his "belfry with its magnificent silhouette.
